CMS to review use of power strips in patient care areas

The Joint Commission (TJC) announced at the June AAMI Annual Meeting that it has been asked by CMS to prohibit the use of re-locatable power tabs (RPTs), also known as power strips, in patient care areas, pending confirmation by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).   The Healthcare Interpretation Committee of NFPA has unanimously voted to recommend CMS to consider allowing the use of special purpose RPTs (based on the UL 1363A or equivalent standard).
